CHIEF OF STAFF, RBN

Commander Sahibul Bahari bin Hj Zainal Abidin, RBN assumed duties as Chief of Staff Royal Brunei Navy on 25 May 2018 after serving as Fleet Chief of Staff Royal Brunei Navy in 2017. Commander Sahibul Bahari joined the Royal Brunei Navy after completing his Royal Brunei Armed Forces Recruit Training on the 12th of May 1996 and then commissioned as a Midshipman in December 1997 after completing his Naval Officer Cadet Course at Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC), in Dartmouth, United Kingdom. His training continued when he was posted as an Officer Under Training on board the Missile Gun Boat (KDB SETERIA) and Coastal Patrol Craft (KDB PEMBURU). In 1999 he attended the International Sub-Lieutenant course at Royal Navy’s Maritime Warfare school, HMS DRYAD, Portsmouth, United Kingdom. He completed this course in 08 August 2000.

Commander Sahibul Bahari’s first assignment was with KDB PEMBURU as Executive Officer from 14 August 2000 to 31 December 2002. Next, he served as Staff Officer Grade Three (3) Administration and Personnel when he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and then he was appointed as Executive Officer on board Missile Gun Boats (KDB SETERIA and KDB PEJUANG) from 15 April 2003 to 02 January 2006. He then took his first command appointment as the Commanding Officer on board Coastal Patrol Crafts (KDB PEMBURU and KDB PERWIRA) from 26 November 2006 until 31 March 2009.  

Commander Sahibul Bahari has held several command and staff appointments throughout his career including as Commanding Officer of KDB DARUTTAQWA in 2016, Head of Inspectorate Cell in 2014, Executive Officer KDB DARUSSALAM in 2013, Executive Officer KDB DARULAMAN in 2011, and Staff Officer Grade Two (2) Inspectorate Cell in 2010. 
 
Throughout his career, he has undergone various courses abroad and local such as International Sub-Lieutenant in 2000, International GMDSS in 2001, Communication and IT Security in 2002, Anti Submarine Warfare course in 2003, Mine Hunting Officer course 2005, International Signal Communication Officer in 2005, International Principal Warfare Officer course in 2006 and Command Staff course in 2012.

Commander Sahibul Bahari has also been involved in various operations such as Command Task Force 151 (CTF151) Anti Piracy at Gulf of Aden as Deputy Intelligence Cell under the command of Republic of Singapore Navy in 2013. He was also involved in the Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) in Tacloban City when Haiyan Typhoon struck the Republic of Philippines in November 2013. He was also part of the first crew on board KDB DARULAMAN on her maiden voyage back from Federal Republic of Germany in 2011. He has also held various important appointments in multilateral exercises such as Asean Defence Ministers Meeting plus Multilateral Exercise Expert Working Group Maritime Security (Exercise Mahi Tangoroa – Auckland, New Zealand) where he was appointed as Exercise Director in 2016. He was also part of the planner deployment and exercise during RBN’s first Rim of the Pacific exercise in Hawaii, United States of America in 2014. 

Commander Sahibul Bahari’s military decoration includes the General Service Medal, the RBAF Golden Jubilee, the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal as well as the Military Civic Action Medal awarded by Republic of the Philippines for Typhoon Haiyan relief. Commander Sahibul Bahari is married to Haniwati binti Hj Bakar and is blessed with 2 sons and 2 daughters.
